Hydrophobic Glass Coating for Facades in India: Cost, Coverage and Application

Short answer: a hydrophobic glass coating makes water bead and run off facade glass, taking much of the dust with it, so the glass stays clearer between cleans and each clean is quicker. With Nanoman Glass + Ceramic, one concentrate set makes 20 L of coating and covers 18,000 to 20,000 sq ft, about ₹3 per sq ft including the alcohol used to dilute it. Applied to clean, dry glass in the shade, it lasts up to 5 years depending on exposure.

Why facade glass in India gets dirty so fast

Three things work against facade glass here: dust that settles through the dry months, monsoon rain that carries that dust down the glass and leaves streaks as it dries, and hard water from cleaning or irrigation that leaves white mineral spots. Untreated glass is slightly rough at a microscopic level, so water spreads into a thin film, dries where it stands and leaves behind whatever it was carrying.

A hydrophobic coating fills that roughness with a thin, invisible layer that water cannot wet. Rain and rinse water form beads that roll off, and dirt has far less to grip.

What it costs

Item Figure
Price per set (Part A + Part B) ₹48,600 + GST
Ready-to-use coating per set 20 L, diluted with IPA or ethanol
Coverage per set 18,000 to 20,000 sq ft (about 1,670 to 1,860 m²)
Application rate 8 to 12 ml of ready-to-use coating per m²
Material cost About ₹3 per sq ft, including the IPA
Expected life Up to 5 years, depending on exposure

As an example, a 10,000 sq ft curtain wall needs about half a set, roughly ₹30,000 of material at ₹3 per sq ft. Access, whether rope access, a gondola or a boom lift, is usually the bigger cost, so plan the coating for the same visit as a deep clean.

Where to use it, and where not to

Use it on windows, glass doors, shopfronts, facades and skylights; balustrades and pool fences; shower screens and mirrors; glazed wall and floor tiles, basins and sanitaryware.

Do not use it on unglazed tiles, natural stone or grout (use Stone + Brick for those); acrylic or polycarbonate; window film or coated low-E glass without testing first; or glass that is already etched or heavily scaled until it has been restored.

How to apply it on a facade

Before you start

  1. Clean the glass thoroughly, removing grease, limescale and any old polish or sealer. The coating bonds to the glass, not to dirt.
  2. Finish with an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipe and let the glass dry completely.
  3. Work in the shade, between 5 °C and 35 °C and below 85% relative humidity, with no rain expected for 12 hours. On west- and south-facing elevations that usually means early morning or late afternoon.

Application

  1. Combine Part A and Part B and dilute with IPA or ethanol as directed on the data sheet.
  2. Spray lightly onto about 1 m² at a time, or onto the applicator cloth.
  3. Wipe in overlapping circles or figure-of-eight passes for even coverage. A little goes a long way.
  4. After 2 to 5 minutes, buff off any haze with a clean, dry microfibre cloth.
  5. Keep the glass dry and untouched for 1 hour. Full water repellency develops within 24 hours.
  6. Check that water beads on the glass, and re-coat any missed patches.

Keeping it working

  • Clean with plain water and a soft squeegee or microfibre cloth. On a coated facade a rinse often does most of the work.
  • Avoid abrasive pads, scrapers and harsh alkaline cleaners, which wear the coating away.
  • When water stops beading on part of the facade, clean that section and re-coat it. There is no need to strip the rest.

Coating versus simply cleaning more often

A coating does not make glass self-cleaning, and it does not replace cleaning. What it changes is how quickly dirt builds up, how much effort each clean takes and how long the glass looks clear afterwards. For buildings where every clean needs access equipment, fewer and faster cleans are where the coating pays for itself.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a hydrophobic glass coating last on a facade?

Nanoman Glass + Ceramic lasts up to 5 years, depending on exposure. Elevations that take the most sun, rain and run-off wear faster, so check water beading on those first.

Can it go on glass with hard-water spots?

Only after the spots and any limescale have been removed. Glass that is already etched or heavily scaled should be restored before it is coated.

Does the coating change how the glass looks?

No. It forms an invisible film. Any haze after application is buffed off with a dry microfibre cloth within 2 to 5 minutes.

How much glass does one set cover?

One Part A + Part B set makes 20 L of ready-to-use coating, which covers 18,000 to 20,000 sq ft (about 1,670 to 1,860 m²) at 8 to 12 ml per m².

Can the same coating be used in bathrooms?

Yes. It works on shower screens, mirrors, glazed tiles, basins and sanitaryware. For unglazed tiles, natural stone or grout, use Stone + Brick instead.
